In addition to his serving in city government, Abercrombie was active in the community. He was a past member of the Rushville Kiwanis Club, where he was also past president. During the ?70?s, he was president of the Rushville National Bank. He was also a member of the Rushville Rotary Club. He helped found the Boy?s Club. While serving as president of the County Council on Aging, he worked to help acquire and renovate the Rush County Senior Center. In 1978, he was voted Citizen of the Year for his commitment to the Rush County business community.
A 1930 graduate, he received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the Rushville High School Alumni Association in 1981. He was a 50 year member of the Main Street Christian Church where he seved as church trustee and on the church board.
